The following lines are inscribed on a tree, near the
entrance of a dark wood, adjoining the farmhouse of a
gentleman, where I some time ago made an excursion. . .
  "Trees may have ears, and trees may not be dumb."
  Thou that at evenings solemn-pensive hour, 
  As thro' the west she waves her mantle grey, 
  Absorb'd in thoughts, dost woo the hold pow'r, 
  By roving fancy's magic led this way.
